A contract legal expert from South West law firm Lodders will be in the saddle at a seminar for equestrians and landowners who are running or thinking of starting an equine business.
Organised by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), the Equine Seminar Putting the Industry Through Its Paces takes place on Thursday 10th November at the Unicorn Trust Equestrian Centre,Netherswell, Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire.
At the event, Lodders partner and contract expert Stephen Thomas will provide an insight into the do's and don'ts when buying and selling horses and how to manage the risks associated with damage that can caused by horses. He explains:
The CLA Equine Seminar is a chance for people already running an equine business, or those considering setting one up, to gain top-level insight into the challenges and opportunities the equine industry presents.
Alongside our advice on buying and selling horses, the event will cover presentations from equine industry experts on issues including planning, rates, property and tax.
It will be an informative, practical session that will explore a wide range of issues from liveries to legislation, he says. Not only does its speakers include professionals and advisers, it also has international event rider and chartered surveyor Ben Way, who will offer an insight into the different sides of working for and running an equestrian business.
The equine industry contributes some £7 billion a year to the UK economy and provides full time employment of about 200,000 people, mainly in rural areas. CLA South West Director, John Mortimer, comments: The summer Olympics highlighted some of the extraordinary equine skills we have in the UK, and with nearly four million people involved in riding or equestrian sports in this country, many see this as a great business opportunity.
As well as Lodders, the event is supported by Butler Sherborn, McLoughlin Planning and Hazlewoods; the cost is £30 to CLA members and £40 to non-members.

Recent changes in legislation have led the CLA to produce a new handbook on horses and law, and this will be launched at the November event.
