Law firm Lodders has revealed details of its latest recruitment drive that will see it add up to seven, including three senior solicitors, to its 20-strong Cheltenham team.
This next phase in its ambitious growth strategy in the town not only signals the 230-year old firms long-term commitment and vision for its Gloucestershire location, but is also a strong indication that the region has returned to pre-recession business levels and economic health.
In this latest recruitment drive, the firm is looking to add to its private client, real estate, residential property, corporate and commercial, and family law teams in response to sustained, substantial growth since the Cheltenham office opened in October 2013.
Partner and head of Lodders Cheltenham operation Paul Mourton, explains:
We are delighted with the start we have made in Cheltenham. We have had to revise upwards our financial targets each year so far, and are now looking for talented and ambitious lawyers to join our team who will be part of the next phase of Lodders growth in this region.
'We are looking for a senior solicitor/associate in our private client team, a 1 to 3 year qualified solicitor in the real estate team, a senior conveyancer in residential property, a senior solicitor/associate for our corporate and commercial team, and a solicitor and paralegal in the family law team.'
Lodders family law team launched last year when the firm acquired the towns boutique practice Jordans Solicitors and family law specialists Barbara Jordan and Erin Sawyer joined the Cheltenham operation. Barbara is without doubt Cheltenhams pre-eminent family lawyer, and alongside Erin, our family law team provides clients with advice on all family law matters, says Paul. This is an excellent opportunity to join a thriving, ambitious, skilful and established team in the town.
Amongst Lodders corporate clients are some of the big names in the real estate sector, including St Modwen, Spitfire Properties, Centaur Homes and private company IM Properties plc.
Paul explains: We recently acted for IM Properties on the sale of a portfolio of thirteen distribution warehouses located across the UK in one of the biggest industrial investment property deals this year, valued in excess of £200million. This sale followed hard on the heels of an £11.4m sale of nine industrial and trade counter units owned by IM Properties at Longwell Green in Bristol, on which we also acted for the company.
These deals demonstrate that Lodders offers ambitious lawyers that unusual combination of working on high level work and for the type of clients you%u2019d perhaps expect in a big city firm, but based in a provincial location, says Paul.
Locally they are further evidence of the renewed confidence in the property and development sector that has boosted Gloucestershires buoyant economic performance. Such sentiment is matched by growing consumer confidence in Cheltenham, heightened by the imminent arrival of a flagship John Lewis store next year.
Paul adds: The firm aims to give its staff responsibility for clients and their business area from day one, playing to their strengths, supporting their growth and ambitions in an environment that nurtures mutual trust amongst our team and with clients, and in this latest recruitment drive we are looking for Cheltenhams most ambitious and able solicitors to join our team. Each of the new hires is an important role in our growing, thriving operation, and an exceptional opportunity for them to join a sustainable, financially stable firm.
'Lodders is without doubt an ambitious firm with its sights on continued growth and success which will be underpinned by our financial stability. Lodders really does work hard to ensure a supportive environment and a team that can enhance and enjoy in its success.
Support and opportunity are common themes amongst Lodders team as James Spreckley, who joined the firm after 17 years at a large city firm last year and now heads the firms Agriculture and Landed Estates team, explains:
Moving firms at a senior level was something to be taken very seriously, but the quality of the work undertaken by Lodders easily matches what I was used to, but the real difference really comes from the overall environment which is friendly and very much more client focussed. With fantastic support from within the firm, I am much freer to concentrate on looking after the firms clients and helping to build the business, and that has been a real breath of fresh air.
Equity Partner in Lodders private client team Louise Igoe joined Lodders as a trainee, qualified into the private client team and went on to make history at the firm in 2011 when she became its youngest partner at the age of 30. She became an equity partner last year, and says: Since I joined as a trainee I have worked on a variety of cases from complex estates, to wills and tax planning. Lodders works hard to support and nurture its talent and trainees and has provided me with the very best grounding for a solid legal career. The firm has experienced sustained growth in instructions, especially over the last two years.
Natalie Smith joined Lodders Cheltenham office in June 2014 and explains that since day-one, she has found the firm to be supportive, progressive and rewarding: The quality of the work is second to none she says, and Lodders very successfully supports all its team across each of its offices, and I feel very much part of the 20-strong Private Client team and of the firm as a whole, with endless opportunity to learn and develop, which is so important to an ambitious solicitor. Lodders has always been supportive of my ideas and if you want to get involved in marketing, events and business development, the opportunities are definitely there.
Amongst the initiatives Natalie has led in Cheltenham are Lodders participation in the annual Will Aid campaign, and the creation of a dedicated Equine Law team. Lodders senior team and partners quickly identified with these two ideas. The firm is supportive, but not at the expense of a realistic work-life balance. The opportunities to progress definitely exist and the firm is keen to plan its own succession, with young partners appointed to drive the firm and push it onto the next level.
Holly Kennett, Legal Executive in the Residential Property team says that the firm%u2019s Cheltenham location is ideal: Being right at the heart of Cheltenham town centre is great for clients and attending networking events. We also benefit from the high level of support from the firm%u2019s Stratford based teams. The working environment is friendly and motivating, with a high calibre of clients and busy work flow and I enjoy being part of a well-established, family-orientated firm.
